How many cameras does it take to tell a story? After recently acquiring a fourth camera, the Sony a7sII, I have asked myself “How much equipment, is too much equipment?” I love having four angles to cut between an interview. It makes each time you cut the cameras a surprise. You give the audience something new almost each time. But how much is too much?
Currently all the gear I use can fit into two carry on bags and three checked bags. There is no way for just one person to move all that equipment by themselves. Most the time the added gear really helps to solve problems you might run into. But when I started this full time two years ago I had one camera and one mic. In many ways things were purer. The films I produced seem to focus more on story.
This is my resolution this year. To produce films that get back to basics. To produce more films with story at their heart. No matter the size of the production.
